We’re interested in graduates with skills in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Chemistry.

Graduate Training

IChemE accredited graduate training

JM Davy’s graduate training program for chemical engineers has held IChemE accreditation for more than thirty years – in fact, our program was one of the first to receive such accreditation.

Our goal is to bring our graduates to chartered engineering status at the earliest point possible in their careers.

To that end, we ensure our graduates receive a range of on-the-job experience, which includes:

  • Spending time at our state-of-the art Global R&D Centre in the Tees Valley, UK, developing our current and new technologies.
  • Working onsite at a client’s chemical plant, which will most likely be located outside the UK.
  • Undergoing a range of personal development training courses.

Graduate mentors

We assign a mentor to each of our graduates to help guide them through the training program described above.

JM Davy mentors are chartered in their respective fields. They use their extensive experience to ensure their graduates receive the breadth of experience necessary to build strong foundations for a lasting career.

The Work

What the work is:

Examples of work our graduate chemical engineers perform include:

  • Developing novel flow schemes and processes for the oil and gas, petrochemical and biochemical industries.
  • Producing heat & mass balances, data sheets, piping and instrumentation diagrams and operating manuals as part of a Basic Engineering Package.
  • Reviewing detail engineering to ensure compliance with the process requirements.
  • Training our clients’ engineers.
  • Reviewing equipment and piping during the construction of clients’ plants.
  • Providing advice and guidance to the client’s operation team during commissioning of a plant.
  • Providing support to clients on the optimisation of their plants and processes.

How the work is performed:

Performing the work described above can involve:

  • Collaborating with Chemists at the R&D Centre on development and experimental programs.
  • Working in project teams that work to a budget and schedule.
  • Using Aspen Plus, Aspen Hysys, SimSci PRO/II and other modelling and simulation software.
  • Having work checked and/or approved by a senior colleague.
  • Reviewing drawings and data sheets from other engineering disciplines and detail engineers.
  • Travelling to client sites overseas to check plant construction and provide commissioning support.
Application Requirements

We’re looking for graduates with:

  • A 2:1 or above MEng in Chemical Engineering and;
  • Excellent A Level grades in Maths, Physics or Chemistry.

Graduate Training

Mechanical engineering graduate training

Our goal is to bring our mechanical engineering graduates to IMechE chartered engineering status at the earliest point possible in their careers.

To that end, we ensure our graduates receive a range of on-the-job experience, which includes:

  • Visiting our state-of-the art Global R&D Centre in the Tees Valley, UK, to see development work taking place on our current and new technologies.
  • Visiting a client’s chemical plant – which will most likely involve travelling outside the UK – or maybe spending time at one of our equipment suppliers.
  • Undergoing a range of personal development training courses.

Graduate mentors

Supporting our training program described above are our mentors, who we assign to each of our graduates.

Every mechanical engineering mentor is IMechE certified. They ensure their assigned graduates receive the breadth of experience necessary to rapidly obtain chartered status and successfully establish themselves in their chosen career.

The Work

What the work is:

Examples of work our graduate mechanical engineers perform include:

  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, under the guidance of experienced professional engineers, covering many aspects of mechanical engineering and embracing heat transfer, fluid mechanics and mechanics of materials.
  • Developing designs and specifications for a wide range of mechanical equipment and pressure systems associated with process plants, such as heat exchangers, furnaces, pressure vessels and plant piping.
  • Monitoring the equipment’s design through the manufacturing phase.
  • Reviewing the equipment’s installation onsite.
  • Evaluating the equipment’s performance once operational.

How the work is performed:

Performing the work described above can involve:

  • Working in small teams that specialise in particular aspects of equipment design.
  • Undertaking design work using advanced software tools such as Autodesk Inventor for 3-D modelling, ANSYS CFX for CFD analysis, Autodesk Algor for FEA.
  • Performing design and analytical work in the London head office and undertaking manufacturing and site installation work at the manufacturer works or client sites which are predominantly overseas.
  • Employing equipment, materials and design methods which are at the limit of proven experience.

JM Davy offer two routes into our R&D department – graduates can enter as Chemists, or school leavers can join with A-levels as Junior Chemists and work towards a degree via part-time studies.

Our goal is to guide our chemistry graduates to chartered chemist status at the earliest point possible in their careers. To that end, we ensure our graduates receive a range of on-the-job experience, which includes:

  • Being based at our state-of-the art Global R&D Centre in the Tees Valley, UK, working on our current and new technology developments.
  • Working onsite at a client’s chemical plant, which will most likely be located outside the UK.
  • Undergoing a range of personal development training courses.

Graduate mentors

Each of our graduate chemists is supported through their graduate training programs by an assigned mentor, who will themselves be a chartered chemist.

The mentors ensure their assigned graduates receive the breadth of experience necessary to rapidly obtain chartered status and successfully establish themselves in their chosen career.

Graduate Work

What the work is:

Examples of work our graduate chemists perform include:

  • Developing novel homogeneous catalyst systems using high-pressure equipment in a laboratory environment.
  • Performing system scale-ups, developing new and existing technologies by testing them with alternative feedstocks.
  • Working on broader aspects of overall processes to gain greater insights into the chemical engineering behind them.
  • Working as part of a team to run experimental pilot plants, generating data that will translate to designs for full-scale plants.
  • Devising experiments and analytical methods to support process developments or to improve existing methods.
  • Being accountable for experimental results and data analysis.

How the work is performed:

Performing the work described above can involve:

  • Performing experiments and development work in the R&D Centre’s laboratories and pilot plants.
  • Analysing and compiling experimental data
  • Working and interacting with clients.
School Leaver Training

Our Junior Chemist training scheme allows 18 year-olds with good science A-levels to gain extensive practical experience and industry knowledge while studying towards a degree part-time.

We ensure our Junior Chemists receive the right balance of personal responsibility and guidance from experienced staff to give them the best start to their industry careers.

School Leaver Work

What the work is:

Examples of work our junior chemists perform include:

  • Undertaking test work as part of research development programmes which provide licensee support.
  • Operating pilot plant process units and ensuring their smooth operation.
  • Providing analytical support to mini-plant units using small-scale analytical laboratory equipment.
  • Calibrating analytical equipment and analysing samples by various techniques which include XRF, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Capillary GC, MS and classical wet analytical methods.
  • Constructing lab-scale equipment.

How the work is performed:

Performing the work described above can involve:

  • Performing experiments and development work in the R&D Centre’s laboratories and pilot plants.
  • Compiling monthly reports to demonstrate understanding and validity of test work. These reports are distributed within the company.
  • Being part of a staff rotation system which ensures that each Junior Chemist is exposed to the broadest possible range of technologies licensed by JM Davy.
